One hit kills, gory explosions of blood and guts and flaming swords, on so many levels Volgarr the Viking does not disappoint. From the very beginning right through to whichever level it is you manage to make it to before dying horribly, and repeatedly it is a frustratingly brilliant experience. Repetition will become your new best friend as you succumb to each new levels clever traps, or difficult enemies who will ultimately bring about your repeated death.
You take control of a resurrected mighty Viking warrior “Volgarr” you are looking to eradicate the forces of evil that have taken over the world. You have been thrown into an impeccably designed platform world, full of obstacles and traps that will catch you out on your first, second, third, fourth, maybe even for the one hundredth attempt.
Equipped with an unlimited amount throwing spears, a sword and a double jump which is perfect for taking out flying enemies. As you progress through the levels you come across treasure chests that will grant an extra piece of armour or maybe you will receive an achievement towards gaining your flaming sword.
If you are a fan of the golden-axe era of gaming and still hanker for those 16 bit days then this game is for you. With its simplistic controls, it really brings you back to the old-school days when games where ridiculously hard and required a “just one more” go attitude to master, then you will love this as it is both fun and impossibly difficult. Only the most skilful (and patient) few will be able to play through to the end.
Overall: Volgarr offers a return to the days when games where hard..”Nintendo hard”, the simple 16 bit graphics are matched by simple gameplay deriving its difficultly from testing skill and timing at an un-mercilessly difficult standard for a modern gamer.
You will get annoyed, frustrated and elated within moments of each other. Bubble wrap those controllers before they go flying as rage quitting is almost a certainty. For one of the chosen few who will complete the game you get rewarded with a new game mode “Path of the Valkyrie” which is supposedly an even greater challenge. So you have that to look forward to! Enjoy!!
