“Hay ewe” is a puzzle game now available on iOS that puts the player in control of Matilda, a sheep on a mission. Her mission is not to stuff as many sheep puns into one title but to round up all the lambs that are scattered around the farm.
Players will guide Matilda around the play area by dragging across the screen, collecting the lambs and guiding them to the goal, keeping them safe and avoiding various obstacles. Aside from over sixty levels, the game is stuffed with mini-games, a level editor to challenge friends and other players with your custom puzzles, leader boards, and character customization, so that Matilda can round up the lambs in the latest trends – whether it is with fairy wings and a top hat, or a fancy fedora.
The game tutorials in the first levels quick and easy to understand; the player can start playing right off the bat, and in case you ever forget, the EweTube guides will point you in the right direction. Once the initial first stages are cleared, various new obstacles and dangers are introduced, including a plethora of farm animals that may help or hinder your progress to the goal. Various types of gates that are activated by switches that Matilda the sheep will step on are placed strategically throughout the game, some of which are timed, others weighted – all of them will test your dexterity and patience.
Customization is quite extensive in the game, and adds to the fun – Matilda can be dressed as a pop tart or a fairy while the lambs she collects give a respectful nod to Pai Mei, the kung fu master known from the “Kill Bill” films (I knew that quote looked familiar!). All of these costume pieces are entirely accessible – by trading them for candy. When a lamb is rescued, candy will drop for you to tap on or run Matilda past it – collect it fast or it will be nabbed by a swooping crow. These candy pieces can be traded to buy a multitude of silly hats and outfits for the characters, or to be spent on various power ups to help the player if they’re really stuck, such as a shovel to dig a tunnel from one area of the map to the other, or a booster for Matilda’s speed.
The highest replay factor for this particular game is the level editor. Not only can you build your own levels to test out your skills, (if some of the fiendishly difficult puzzles were a breeze for you) but you can also share them with friends online through Facebook – the popularity of iOS devices among people is quite high, so there will be no shortage of your friends’ challenges to try.
Fun and bright art style, vibrant colours and interesting but challenging puzzles, as well as witty humour throughout, as a mobile game, it seems to be ticking all the boxes – it’s quick to load up, quick and fun to play, and has the very high likelihood of being played a multitude of times. Now available to buy on iTunes, it’s worth every cent of the price and more.
