Ion Assault HD enters the packed world of twin stick shooters and relies on its novel approach to firepower to set it apart in this modern day take on the classic asteroids game. Each map is filling with thousands of little ION particles, your ship is able to suck them up and fire them back out. The almost black hole effect on the surrounding world while sucking in particles even affects the edge of the screen but give the game a wonderful fluid almost liquid motion.

Your little ship is tasked with destroying a number of asteroids. Holding the left trigger starts soaking in the ION particles the longer you charge it the more particles it can suck in and the larger the blast you can emit. You must dodge the debris and content with the thirty different enemies. Destroying enemies and asteroids unlock power ups for your ship and its weapons.

The faster you clear the asteroid the more enemies the game throws at you, this balances the difficulty for the player in game rather than having to choose a difficulty if things are getting too hectic you can slow down and as such the game reacts.

The game boasts thirty levels broken up into six different scenarios all of which can be played with a friend in the co-op mode, or you can battle up to three others in the versus battles either online or on the one console.

Despite the market being quite full with twin stick shooters ION Assault HD manages to be a lot of fun, the craft is light and graceful on screen and the novelty of having to soak up the particles to charge your weapons gives the player something else to concentrate on rather than mindless shooting. This tactical approach mixed with the dynamic difficulty is quite cleaver and does enough to make ION Assault stand out in a crowded market.
