The story told in Islands of Wakfu takes place 10,000 years before Dofus. It’s the end of the world and the last Eliatrope sets of with her dragon brother on a race against time mission. Together, they must find the mythic islands of Wakfu, survive the threat looming over their worlds and try to preserve the remains of their civilisation after the mysterious destruction of an entire race of people. This adventure game combines beat’ em up and shoot’ em up to lead you through a serious of magnificent battles that will test your skill and combat strategy.

The Islands of Wakfu is an action adventure game that takes place in the same universe as the MMORPG Dofus and the MMO Wakfu. You play as a girl named Nora(no Irish Connection of course) and you can switch between her and her brother Efrim who is water Dragon. Like many before their kind in the video game world they cannot speak. Usually by not speaking you can’t really get a sense for a character’s anguish, their sense of justice and of course their love for their world and their love for the people in it.  Visually this game is a complete delicacy for which the eyes feast upon. You want to discover every corner of the enchanting meadows, search through every nook and cranny of the ancient temples, for the colours and graphics are magnificent.

With it’s stunning visuals you must ask yourself what exactly is wrong with this game? The gameplay offers very little to coincide with the stunning visuals. What’s the point in having something that looks beautiful but moves like a bull in a china shop? Nora uses her martial arts in order to combat the enemies while Efrim can use long rang attacks but can also slam enemies to the ground to stun them, you can switch between the siblings at any time. As you progress through the game you collect these honey pots which allow you to improve your techniques. The combat starts off rather simple but as the case in most games of it’s caliber the ante is quickly upped. The game when I first played it reminded me of Zelda on the Super Nintendo

To conclude: Islands of Wakfu traces the origins of the Dofus and the Wakfu world. Those already familiar with the universe will discover how the Eliatropes arrived at Emrub. Those who have already played Dofus will appreciate this arcade game, it only costs 800 microsoft points and if you wish to discover everything you don’t understand about the Dofus game you should play this. Also if you want to start playing Dofus this is a perfect start as you will learn the story right from the start. Islands of Wakfu didn’t really grab me at the start, I found it hard to not skip through the speech bubbles in order to get into the action. Visually it was delightful, and upon completion I started a new game ready for more visual brilliance. Islands isn’t a fantastic game but it is still worth every microsoft point it is valued at.

Score “C” Very good game
