Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham takes a very different approach from previous Lego installments. It has the same formula as the previous games but delivers new features and an expansive Character selection across the entire DC universe, Lego Batman 3 Beyond Gotham is all most a Justice League game which ventures into the DC movies and TV shows via the DLC packs.

Having more than 150 characters to choose from the game encourages you to collect all the characters. Characters are unlocked in many different ways such as collecting characters through story mode or fulfilling certain tasks like defeating enemies while wearing the Batsuit, or by helping Batdog defend the Batcave from enemies. Many other characters are hidden in levels and you can try to unlock them by solving the puzzles and collecting items.

The game uses the “Suit Wheel” which allows your characters to have the ability to swap suits quickly. This allows for more fluid game play in scenarios where you have to be a specific character to solve the puzzle without going all the way back to a suit station like in previous games.

Some of the suits that you have access to like the Electricity suit, Illumination suit and Space suit do require charging at certain ports/power stations which I found limiting at points. In free play you can swap to other characters that can fly over and around obstacles throughout the many levels.

Through out the game there is a lot of banter with the characters in the cut scenes, and during gameplay. This gives the game it traditional comical feel, I did find myself laughing at the cheesy puns during the cutscenes.

There are several Cameo Appearances from, high profile stars including Conan O’Brien and Kevin Smith. Conan O’Brien acts as a tour guide throughout the free play mode, and will explain about the Batcave, watchtower and many more. Unfortunately after a while of going back and forth between locations in free play, you will find these cameos annoying as the dialogue repeats over and over.

The story is a traditional super villain tale, Brainiac intends to shrink the earth for his own personal collection. Our heroes must travel from planet to planet saving “the Lanterns” and back to earth to visit some iconic DC locations.

There is a Season pass available for Lego Batman 3 : Beyond Gotham. This includes DLC add ons from The Dark Knight Trilogy, Man of Steel, Arrow ( the TV show) and many more. This will bring a good mix to the Story and expand the DC lore even more. For the Arrow DLC they have hired the the actors of the show for some voiceover work.

Overall: From my time with the game it was incredibly enjoyable and jam packed with comedy and action, exactly what you would expect from a lego title. Co-Op mode offered the most fun locally although the lack of online co-op and a frustrating camera did take away from the experience.
