Tales of Xillia 2 Preview

When Square Enix announced recently that they had come to the realisation that they needed to focus on more traditional games, namely going back to its roots in the JRPG genre, they acknowledged what every fan of their early games knew. Since this deviation by Square Enix caused a vacuum in which players sought to satisfy their Role Playing needs, other franchises sprung up and flourished, riding on the success the “Final Fantasy” brand and each seeking to carve out its own slice of that lucrative pie. One of the more impressive entries is the Tales Of series.

characters

The first of these is the much anticipated Tales of Xillia 2. Following on from the success of the first incarnation, we have a whole new plot based in the world established in the prequel. Where the Tales Of games shine in particular is in their ability to establish and present entire worlds. Culture, mythology, ecosystems, all of these are beautifully captured and thoroughly delivered through gorgeous cel shading, in the predictable anime style. What we have been promised though is a slightly darker, more mature story.

Battle

The game focuses on Ludger Kresnik, a young man and a skilled chef who lives in Trigleph city in Elympios with his brother Julius and their cat Rollo. He strives to follow in his brother’s footsteps and work as an agent in the prestigious Spirius Corporation, a large scale and illustrious company that develops technology for every field imaginable. One day, through a chance encounter, he meets Elle Marta: a young girl travelling alone attempting to reunite with her father at the mythic “Land of Canaan” and ends up accompanying her. His choice to accompany her will send the two on a journey that will change the fate of the two worlds forever.

It’s not overly original but it establishes the stereotypical “Accidental hero has to save the world” quest which is par for the course for these games. What separates Tales Of Xillia from other RPGs is the fun, fast paced battle system. You can see a few examples of this in the video below.

Tales of Xillia 2 will be coming out on PS3 on the 22nd of Aug this year. Definitely one for the RPG fans out there
