Left Behind is the first single player (story based) DLC for Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us, one of the finest games on the Current Gen platform. Up to now there has been little reason to revisit the post-apocalyptic world, so if nothing else “Left Behind” gives us that excuse. A hefty 5.2GB download awaits you and this should signal that the same level of quality that we saw in the main game has been put into this DLC.

Left Behind is set well before the events of the main game and does an excellent job of exploring and revealing certain aspects of the main story and its characters that you might have felt were not fully fleshed out. You play a younger Ellie, one who is yet to experience the events of the main game but as a young girl growing up in the quarantine zone has still had her fair share of hardships.

01

Ellie and her one time best friend Riley have grown up together in the quarantine zone but have recently started to drift apart as they begin to travel different paths. Riley has decided her future lies with the Fireflies and this has not gone down too well with Ellie. In an effort to perhaps rekindle their friendship or more likely to have one last adventure the two girls head for the abandoned mall that they used to frequent.

As you can imagine things take a turn for the worst and it is not long before you are again faced with a terrifying game of cat and mouse along with all the necessary scavenging for supplies. Ellie is much smaller than Joel so up close combat is not really an option. When fighting both Clickers and Humans it is Ellie’s small size and nibble feet that will be your biggest advantage.

04

Taking into account the slight shift in gameplay required to play as Ellie everything else is the same so you will sink back into the game very quickly. Ammo is extremely sparse especially on the harder difficulties so you are required to make a better use of other everyday items to supplement your fighting style.

Visually the game still looks amazing, even after a few months with the Next Gen machines this still look gorgeous. Naughty Dog have crafted one of the most interesting worlds and it is one I was very happy to return to. There is something especially engrossing about the abandoned and derelict world. The overgrown, rundown buildings that are still haunted by the people who used to live and work there.

Overall: Excellent story based DLC that will give you an extra few hours to enjoy Naughty dog’s masterpiece. Three hours might be seen as a little short but I felt it was just right for what they wanted to get done. Hopefully we will get some more single player DLC in the future.

SCORE 4.5/5
