Tower of Guns works because it is simple to pick up and start playing, but incredibly difficult to master.

The simple “one gun” combat mechanic is offset by the incredibly high level of skill required to complete a full run through without coming a cropper. A full run is short at around 40-60 minutes, but the random storylines, and semi random procedurally generated rooms offer variety for every play through. Finally the hidden secrets will keep the completionist busy for quite some time.

Tower of Guns is a Roguelike FPS. The objective is simple get to the top of the tower without dying. Doing that is much harder as you battle through increasingly difficult enemies and traps. This is old school simple FPS action, the controls are simple and the concept is simple, you shoot the enemies and grab the loot they drop to level up and gain different abilities.

Even though games only last a max of 60 mins chances are you won’t make the top very often, you will die a lot and when you do it is a permanent death, back to the start you go, you lose all the weapons, perks and upgrades you gathered. This added pressure becomes increasingly noticeable when you get close to the end as there is so much more to lose.

As mentioned earlier the rooms are semi random, basically you will find the layout doesn’t change much but rather where the enemies are and what type of enemies you face is completely random. This isn’t a game you can learn from trial and error, perks and guns that were effective in the last run might not necessarily result in the same outcome in the next run.

Visually, while not dazzling, its simplicity again works. The game is fast paced and there is a lot happening so it is important that you can always see what is going on in front of you but that’s not to say it isn’t pretty in its own way. The sound design needs special mention too as it adds an extra element to the game especially when it builds the fear as you start to reach further and further up the tower.

Overall: Tower of Guns is simple on the face yet complex under the hood. While at first it might appear like a very basic arcade FPS it has so much more to offer the longer you spend with it (and not just due to the difficultly). Throughout the game there are numerous secrets to explore and discover which offers the chance to keep playing and testing yourself for some time ensuring a decent amount of value for money.
