What is Final Fantasy Explorers?

Announced a few weeks ago, very little information has surfaced regarding Square-Enix’s Final Fantasy spin-off, other than it is a job focused multi-player game. As the trailer suggests, it is heavily influenced by Final Fantasy V’s job system, and that it is far more game-driven rather than story driven.

This news may be divisive for fans, as the FF games were once known for their stellar story-telling abilities. They have faltered in the games of late (The FF XIII trilogy being a typical example of this), so perhaps a game more focused on gameplay would be good for the series?
Then again, this is a trick they have tried before, with the Crystal Chronicles spin-offs. And regardless how you feel about those title, they have been largely underwhelming games, a mediocre distraction at best.

So how might Final Fantasy Explorers be different? Well, for starters, it looks genuinely fun, shirking the repetitive button-bashing ‘Attack attack attack’ of the CC games. There are a lot of special moves on display here, which might make this a lot more action-based than turn-based, with plenty of focus on the battles themselves instead of the goals at the end.
The gameplay footage that was released suggests a sort of Final Fantasy/Dynasty Warriors hybrid, with a bit of Monster Hunter thrown in for good measure. Which brings us to the summons…

The trailer puts some serious emphasis on the summon monsters, but if this is not heavily story-driven then that suggests that the summons may be driving force behind the game. Maybe Monster Hunter is an apt comparison, with each mission divided into hunting one summon monster for personal gain?
If that’s the case, this could very different from any Final Fantasy game that’s come before.
Let’s hope it doesn’t fall into the bland CC category, and that it’s as fun as it looks!
