Kung Fu Panda 2 Releases

Kung Fu Panda 2 opened in 11 international markets this weekend to a heavyweight total of $55 mil from 8,023 locations.  The Dragon Warrior came in at #1 in nine of the territories it played in, shattering a string of records in the process. This opening represents 29% of the international markets on the film. 

Kung Fu Panda 2 posted huge #1 totals in China ($16mil from 5,540 positions), Russia ($15.0mil from 700 locations), and Korea ($13 mil from 1,080 situations).

CHINA – The Chinese total Saturday (opening day)was the all-time highest debut by a foreign film based on early estimates, exceeding the record set last weekend by Pirates of the Caribbean 4 by an amazing 50%. The 2 day weekend total of $16 million represents the biggest opening 2 day weekend, the biggest opening day and the fastest film to cross Rmb 100 million in the market (2 days
RUSSIA – excluding previews of $1.3mn, the Russian gross ( $15 million total) was 70% more than Kung Fu Panda’s opening, 47% greater than Rio and 90% the better of How to Train Your Dragon and became the third highest opening for an animated film in that market behind only Shrek Forever After and Ice Age 3

KOREA –  the movie recorded the year’s biggest opening and the all-time biggest opening  for an animation, outperforming Kung Fu Panda by 60%, Shrek Forever After by 106%, and How to Train Your Dragon by 88%.

Other record breaking totals included Singapore, where the film produced the all-time biggest opening for an animation, claiming #1 with $2.5mn from 25 locales and outstripping Kung Fu Panda by 40%, Shrek Forever After by 103%, and How to Train Your Dragon by 181%;  the Philippines, where it also posted the all-time biggest opening for an animation, shooting straight to #1 with $1.9mn from 114 positions and besting Kung Fu Panda by 69%, Shrek Forever After by 57%, and Toy Story 3 by 58%.  Malaysia contributed $1.4mn from 89 positions – #1 locally, yet another all-time biggest opening for an animation, and 24% ahead of Kung Fu Panda, 97% greater than Shrek Forever After, and 186% more than How to Train Your Dragon – in Thailand the movie took #1 with $959k from 45 locales, a total that included the all-time biggest daily gross for an animation (on Saturday) as well as becoming the biggest opening ever for an animated film, and that exceeded Kung Fu Panda’s opening by 123%, Toy Story 3 by 51%, and Shrek Forever After’s by 592%, and in India claimed #1 with $1.2 mil from 120 positions, also the all-time biggest opening for an animation.  In Taiwan it surpassed Kung Fu Panda by 11%, Shrek Forever After by 62%, and How to Train Your Dragon by 226% with $1.2mn from 59 positions; and in Ukraine it debuted at #1 with $850k from 107 situations, 5% ahead of Kung Fu Panda, 12% more than Rio, and 54% the better of How to Train Your Dragon.

In all Kung Fu Panda 2 became the Highest Grossing Animated film ever released in 7 of its 11 debut markets this weekend
