Mortal Kombat X released under the huge burden of expectation due to the impressive showing of its predecessor. Mortal Kombat, the ninth game in the series, was both a reboot and a sequel. It presented gamers with a strong story mode to add something extra to the traditional 1v 1 fighter experience.

NetherRealm studios has, through countless hours of hard work, raised the bar for all new-gen fighting games with Mortal Kombat X. Not only have they had to face the challenge of improving on the excellence that came before it, but they also needed to avoid falling into the trap of banking on nostalgia and failing to innovate.

This latest title in the series sees the addition of several new characters, while some of the older, better known fighters, fade away into the background or disappear completely. Each fighter now boasts three different fighting styles which adds a welcome new layer of strategy to character selection. Newcomers to the MK series will find the new styles interesting while veterans will find that their favorite characters now fit their playing style even better.

The new fighters are the offspring of several of the older characters and are clearly NetherRealm Studios way of moving the series onwards and letting the heroes and villains of the past games finally fade into history. Cyrax, Smoke, Nightwolf, and Baraka are not playable characters but hopefully they may return in some future dlc pack.

The story mode while very similar to the last game does include some smaller additions. The introduction of some quick time events during video sequences along with a shorter, much tighter, story enhances the single player campaign. As you play through the story mode you will control a variety of different characters (but not the entire cast of fighters) and will have a nice mixture of easy and tough opponents to contend with.

Of course a game like this is best played with others, and while versus games on the same console are near perfect, online modes do throw up sporadic moments of lag where fights would stutter and pause before eventually returning to normal speed.

Mortal kombat has a large selection of game modes to keep its replayability at a maximum. Modes like Test Your might, Endless, Survivor and my personal favorite Test Your Luck are all worth playing, and are even better with friends.

Through playing the various game modes you will accrue koins which can be used to unlock all sorts of items in the krypt. The only thing I didn’t like about the krypt is you never know what you’re going to unlock until you’ve already unlocked it.

My overall impression of mortal kombat is that it is a very good game and my new favorite in the series. If you liked the last mortal kombat game then you will be delighted with the improvements made this time around. If you are new to the series but have played Injustice: Gods Among Us then you will recognize lots of similarities in how both games play, but mortal kombat x is the more polished and refined of the two.

Even with some minor flaws this is the best fighting game on the ps4 right now.
