Product Wireless Controller

Release Date Out Now.

It has been well over a week now since my Wireless Onlive controller showed up opening up another side of the cloud gaming service, games that are just not suited to a mouse and keyboard. Titles like the recently released Pro Evolution 2012 from Konami, or Codemasters Dirt 3.

The controller itself will be quite familiar to most gamers. It has your industry standard layout of two analogue sticks, a D-pad, four face buttons and four shoulder buttons. In truth it is somewhat of a hybrid of the Xbox and PS3 controller, taking the best from both. The PS3’s stick position and D-pad style while using the Xbox’s size and weight along with two rear triggers to create a combination that feels right.

Setting up the controller is a simple affair too, you plug the USB blue tooth stick that comes with it into a USB port and it loads itself onto your PC. The controller links then with a simple press of two buttons and you are ready to go.

While the controller does work pretty well there are some occasions where it doesn’t function quite so perfectly. This for the most part comes down to the fact that many of the games are developed for the PC initially. As with most universal controllers they try to fit in afterwards so the buttons are mapped to work with the game which results in small issues such as the onscreen hints mention “keys” to press but of course they aren’t available on the controller.

A very small issue that is quickly overcome after a few minutes of playing around with but in the beginning some games do require some trial and error. It is a small compromise to make and the service does tell you which games work with the controller before you buy them.

As the Onlive marketplace continues to grow players now have even more options when it comes to choosing how they play, The controller suits those that prefer to sit on the couch over sitting at the desk with their mouse and keyboard. The Wireless controller can also be hooked up to a tablet device (the ones that can be paired with it) and players can finally play AAA console games on their tablets.

Overall : The build quality is top notch, the controller has a nice weight and feel in your hand. It is yet another option for people wanting to test the excellent Onlive service. I did not suffer any lag between button presses and the actions on screen and after giving it a good run for its money I have very little negative to say about the who package.
