TITLE : TRANSFORMERS WAR FOR CYBERTON DEVELOPER : HIGH MOON PUBLISHER : ACTIVISION PLATFORM : XBOX360/PS3/PC RELEASE DATE : OUT NOW | |
Transformers is the third release from the franchise in recent year but the good news for fans is that this is nothing to do with the movies if fact its even set pre cartoon, in the story line. This is good news for fans of Transformers as the film licenced games recently have been pretty awful. Essentially this is the back story before the cartoon, before Optimus became a prime, a lesson in the history of the Transformers.
Set on Cybertron the home planet of the Transformers during a bitter civil war as Megatron tries to wrestle control of the mechanical planet by harnessing a powerful element called Dark Energon. The game is played out over ten levels. Five as the Decepticons and five as the Autobots. You get a choice of three characters at the start of each mission each with different weapons and different abilities.
This is when the game stops being interesting and plays out as a fairly average third person shooter. Full of pretty bland level designs of different corridors often too narrow for your large robots to fit down smoothly and with three characters on screen i found myself on quite a number of occasions getting caught up in others and getting stuck. The poor AI and endless stupid comments do nothing to help the flow of the game. No puzzles worth taking about and nothing to take away from the mindless blasting. It is often difficult to know what is going on or to even care about what is meant to be going on as the story is lost between the shooting.
I have read a few good reviews of this game and wasn't quite sure if i was playing the same game. The graphics are very average the back grounds are just bland and mechanical so much more could be done with them often you have to rely on the targeting system to be able to tell whats a wall and whats and enemy turret. The character animation is average at best the much praised transforming animation is nothing more than a muddle. We saw this kind of stuff at t begining of the current generation at this stage we have much higher expectations.
The gameplay as ive said is pretty average too aside from the ability to transform on the go which is the only redeeming factor the game has, everything else has been done and has been done better in other games. Annoyances like getting stuck in a small spot because your AI controlled buddies wont move out of the way or trying to get into cover with out the ability to lock into that cover makes it pretty frustrating. Not that cover is really needed i found that just holding the shoot button and moving a little to the left was enough to dodge incoming attacks.

This brings me to the main problem, ammo. You run out of ammo really quickly and while there are lots of refill points you can often find your self empty and having to move on hoping some is around the corner plus too much time is wasted scavenging for ammo and the new guns you find are often far less use than the ones you start the level with.
It does feature 3 player co-op and a multiplayer aspect that does give an extra bit of life to the game. The 3 player co-op is a bit more fun as co-op often tends to be. The multiplayer side is far more enjoyable than the single player mode but after 15 hours of the single player mode i found it hard to get excited about and more robot blasting.
Over all it is an average shooter and i think if it didn't have the Transformers name to it it would just disappear along with the other mindless big robot shooters. If you are a massive fan you may get some extra mileage out of if due to the characters involved but for a neutral the story did nothing for me, the characters are annoying and boring to match an annoying and boring game. The game “Haze” kept coming into my mind while playing this and that is never a good thing
