TITLE : MOVE GAMES PREVIEW
DATE : 12th AUGUST
DEVELOPER : MIXED
PUBLISHER : SONY

Playstation move games hands on impressions : Following on from our visit to Sony last night here is a run down of the 8 games we got to test out.

The Fight by XDev Europe : This was the grittiest of all the dedicated Move titles we got to play last night. It is a one on one fighting game. You use two Move controllers one in each hand to map your punches. Unlike previous motion controlled fighting games where the punches are pre programmed The fight uses total 1 to 1 movements to control your fighter. You really have to throw proper punches and you can make up your own fighting styles your fighter will punch just as quick as you can. No more will you be frustrated by bursting out five or six quick punches only for the game to register 2 slow punches. You can even throw a fake punch stopping in mid air and landing a punch with your other hand. You can mix up your styles throw Undercuts, uppercuts, hooks, two fisted smashes. You can also throw in some dirty moves holding the trigger button turns a right hook into a right hook with an elbow follow through. Grab your opponent and throw in a head butt. It also tracks your head movements so you can duck punches.

We got to see an underground arena similar to a warehouse fight scene from Fight club but there are many other locations and fighting styles. Taking on the general at the army base you are faced with a Muay Thai expert who will pick you off with deadly elbows.

This is not a pretty game you need to back your opponent into a corner then pummel him into the ground spilling the blood. The black and white art style similar to Sin city is nice and it allows the blood which is red to show up even more. We had a blast playing this even though at first we struggled to land punches you soon got to grips with it. With some time you will develop and decent fighting style learning new moves and it really is quite a work out so you will shed a few pounds too.

Sports Champions by Zindagi Games : This is our second favourite which is surprising as I had it pinned as a party/tech demo game, but its professional looking graphics an adult themes changed our minds. A mix of a number of sports games. We got to try archery and a sword fighting gladiator style game. There are others but we didn’t have time to test them all. It also includes table tennis, Disc golf and volleyball. Although a mix of sports games it’s not aimed just for kids as the games are a bit more advanced mapping proper movements and they haven’t gone for cute characters.

It uses two Move controllers in the Gladiator fighting one is your shield and one is your sword, For archery one is your bow the other is pulled back as your arrow the other game types only require one controller so you dont need two to start with. While this is a sports game it is still an enjoyable single player game. Needing two controllers does push up the price so we are hoping a bundle will be announced to help reduce the price.

Heavy Rain Move edition By Quantic Dreams : This is third on our list. A game that we have played and finished before but one that will be giving a rebirth by introducing the move. It is one of the better uses of the move controller as the quick time events that used to require a button press or analogue stick twist can now be replaced by the actual movements of checking you r pockets, throwing business cards on tables, swinging punches or just knocking on doors.

As this will be a free update that you will download and not a new game you need to buy it gets even more bonus points from us. But sadly not all the levels will be move compatible you can just choose to play some chaptors. That’s the way it stands at the monet but that may change to take in the full game as its pointless if you are only replaying certain missions but on the plus side it means you can skip those annoying levels with the kids moaning.

TV Super stars by Cambridge studios : This is high on our list for a party game as im not a big fan but this really brings out the silly kid in you. You put your own face into the game which adds to the fun. You take part in five different TV shows taking part in different crazy challenges.

Im not sure how to describe it only to say this is a lot of fun you need to let go of your inhibitions and just enjoy it. Invite your friends over and take the piss out of them.

Kung Fu riders by Japan studios : Where do I start with this one? Only the Japanese could come up with a downhill racer involving office furniture. Apparently you are a secret agent who is being pursued by mobsters through the hilly streets of Hong Kong with only his trusty office chair to help him.

With the controller you speed up by flicking it, control the movement left or right, jump obstacles and spin kick mobsters. While im not sure how long the novelty factor will stay with this one but it was a lot of fun on the night. Completely bonkers but lots of fun.

The shoot by XDev Studios : This is an on rails shooter that is a play on the words the shoot. It is both movie based and shooting based. You only need one controller as you don’t need to control the movements other than to lean left or right which is done by tipping the controller to one side or the other. Like an old arcade shooter the shoot uses the Move controller to turn it into a light gun. You play through a number of different levels from Robots to cowboys. This is a little disappointing as its on rails you are quite detached from the game. It is more of a tech demo to show off the aiming capabilities of the Move controller than a full release. Im not sur what they have in store for this but it really should be bundled with a few of the other small games like Kung Fu riders to make it a full price release.

The last two games are Start the party and Eye pet which we will bunch together here. We didn’t spend too much time on them as they are aimed at kids and we had so much to get through. Start the party is an almost endless supply of little funny games. Turn the controller into a hammer, a sword, an electric razor or paint brush. To take on the mini games like slicing water melons, whack a mole or a wacky hair dresser!

Eye Pet we have covered before on the site before, you have to look after and play with your little pet creature. But it has been made a lot easier to interact with since the introduction of the move controllers. Not much more if you like Eye pet then this is a bonus for you but I was too busy punching heads in the fight!!

A nice mix of games are set for launch before christmass with a list of good hardcore games and a mix of sports, dance and party games should ensure there is something for everyone. Dead Space and Killzone 3 are also on the horizon.
