Sony press conference two new PS3’s, two brand new game announcements, new footage of Medal of Honor and Killzone 3 multiplayer. Infamous 2, GT5 trailers and some sales figures made up the bulk of the Sony opener to Gamescom 2010. But that only made up a a small portion of what was on display all around us. From 3D GT5 to God of War on PSP attendees where spoilt for choice.
Not totally without surprises but it was mainly material we where expecting with a new slant. The big surprise of the night was when Ted Price from Insomniac games confirmed Resistance 3 is on the way. They are now taking a slower approach to making games putting a 3 year time line on development. All we where treated to was an incredibly spooky real life video of a group of survivors making their way along in a train carriage only to come to a halt in a tunnel where in the dim flickering light of a flame they are attacked by hoards of aliens. While not confirmed to have co-op the video did lend itself to that idea with the group teaming up and letting fly with bullets. No gameplay footage or any other details at this time but its the first official confirmation that its on the way..
Not content with that, the other new game again comes from Insomniac games is Rachet and clank “all for one” which features your favourite duo teamed up with 2 more character's in a mad capped four player co-op. Featuring drop in and out co-op and spectacular 3D environments this is one to keep an eye on.
Other new news is that there is two new PS3’s on the horizon a 320GB move bundle will be out in September costing 349euro followed by a 160GB PS3 in October replacing the 299euro 120GB version on sale now. The increased hard drives in response to the increased amount of content being made available on Playstation.
New catch up services will be added to the XMB in the UK they will get ITVplayer to go with the BBC i player added last year, no confirmation on any service for Ireland other countries will get a similar service. Mubi the film service which will launch in Ireland this November is offering free and subscription films. It will feature classics and independent films such as The Host and Pans Labyrinth. Both features will allow people to chat about TV and films they are watching , comment on and recommend shows to others.
Little big planet 2 opened the show and its now even more interactive, not only do you built your own levels but now you can build your own stories and cinematics too. 2.5 million levels have been made for LBP1 and 2 is set to continue that trend for building and sharing user generated content.
Move of course made up a large portion of the event with the brilliant news that MAG will support Move along with, Killzone 3, The fight, Heavy Rain, Socom, Time crisis and RUSE ensuring that all the hardcore gamers have something to get to grips with. We got to test out SOCOM and Killzone 3 among others with the move controllers after the show and i have to admit i’m hooked.
After queing for ages to get our 3D glasses it ended up only getting a small outing, with our stereoscopic glasses on we where treated to some gameplay demo’s of Motorstorm Apocalypse and some video footage of Killzone 3 multiplayer which featured huge robot walkers and jet packs. Virtual tennis 4 was also on show to further expand Sonys push into 3D.
Afterwards we where invited to test the games for ourselves. Socom caught my attention straight away. This was my first time using the move with a shooter like this and straight away it made a huge difference, you can aim where you want look around corners quickly and pick pin point shots from under cars. There is a lot going on but its not overly complicated. It was also confirmed that no allowances have been made the the move so you play the full game as its meant to be. Even multiplayer will pit move against dual shock.
GT5 was on hand in a simulator style arcade set up with full pedals and steering wheel. It is really starting to look amazing. Resident evil 5, Tiger woods 2011, Sorcery, Sly collection 3D, Ruse, Assassins creed brotherhood along with a whole host of other brilliant titles kept us entertained untill late in the evening.
All in all a good event, the press conference was short and sweet nothing mind blowing but we got tons of time to get out hands on the actual games afterwards. All the free beer and BBQ helped cap off a great first evening in Cologne at Gamescom 2010. | |
