KILLZONE 3 GAMESCOM

TITLE : KILLZONE 3 GAMESCOM REPORT
DATE : 22nd AUGUST 2010
DEVELOPER : GUERILLA GAMES
PUBLISHER : SONY
PLATFORM : PS3 EXCLUSIVE
RELEASE DATE : FEB 2011 (TBC)

We got to sit down with some of the development team from Guerrilla Games to have a chat and a look at Killzone 3 at Gamescom this week. Killzone 3 is set for release in February 2011 and will feature support for both 3D and Move. By now you will have seen the trailers the single player game but information on the multiplayer side of it has been light on the ground so that’s where we started. Guerrilla set themselves a number of goals when they set out to make KZ3 multiplayer. They wanted to make it accessible to everyone so they will use an easier way to get into battles against people of a similar level to you. So beginners are not instantly put off by getting destroyed by seasoned pro’s. They wanted to encourage team play, so squad rewards similar to MAG’s system has been introduced you receive extra upgrades while near your team or helping out your team mates rather than going for your own kills and to create this colossal online experience.

A number of new features that have been added to the multiplayer side include the 5 careers, with 6 weapons for each career and 6 unique abilities for each career type. They have tripled the rewards you can unlock and updated the system of obtaining those rewards. You now earn in game currency from getting kills and winning games. This can then be spent on what ever upgrades you want. This will add huge variety to the games as people upgrade to suit their own styles.

Each career has a separate ability which can be used by pressing a direction on the D-pad. Abilities such as a cloaking device so you become invisible as long as you stay perfectly still are very useful. But our favourite is the infiltrate ability this makes you look like the enemy so if you are playing as the IDA you will appear as one of the Helgast to any Helgast players, the only way they will tell that you are undercover is if they place the cross hairs on you they turn red this lets you get in behind enemies quite easily if they are not paying attention. To balance the game each special ability has a counter ability for example if you are undercover some one on the other team has an ability to show up all enemies on the radar near by.

New vehicles will also be making the leap from the single player campaign. The jet packs of course will be there as well as the massive exoskeleton walkers. The medic now has a drone that will circle and protect him as he heals downed comrades, if the medic is shot and left to bleed out as long as he isn’t finished off he will be able to heal himself and get back up. This can be dangerous if you don’t finish a medic off next thing you know he is back on his feet behind you.

A new story driven multiplayer mode will feature two teams, both sides take part in the same story just from two different aspects. Both get intros and both have objectives to complete. They have introduced an item called level event explosive actions which despite it long name is very interesting. These are events that can change the outlook of the game ie. poisonous gas is released into a certain section blocking off that area to the enemy. At the end of the match best player on the winning team gets the bragging rights and a nice cut scene featuring him that everyone gets to see

Killzone will support the new move controller in the single player campaign but you can also use it in the multiplayer games and no allowances will be made for it. It will pit players on the Move playing against players with dual shock controllers. The Move controller works really well with Killzone 3. Picking your target is much easier. Picking up items/guns  and reloading are all done by moving the controller in certain ways. Looking around using the controller takes a little getting use to as it moves when you get to the edge of the screen but its not overly complicated if you spend a little time calibrating the settings and getting used to it. It does add a new dimension to the game you will be able to play it through with a controller then start again with the Move.

So that was enough talking about the game, it now it was time to get down to business. We got to try out the two multiplayer modes for about 30mins. It is very close to being ready, it looks amazing, plays really well. A few small items left to polish and fix but a lot of  time and effort has really gone into this. Lots of the problems that dogged KZ2’s release have been ironed out. The controls are very responsive. The weapons are more reliable and the melee attacks are as brutal as the single player campaign with necks been broken and eyes poked out!

I was a huge fan of Killzone 2 so this is top of my list for 2011 and from what I have played of the single player campaign its going to be amazing. The addition of Move support gives it an extra edge. I really enjoyed the multiplayer I was talked through it by one of the developers. If you ever wanted to know about pressure to perform try sitting down to play Killzone multiplayer with Guerrilla Games developers looking over your shoulder watching you play! I did ok finished in the top 3 and got some praise too. Coming from the makers of the game that’s some high praise ill hold onto for a long time.

We also got some info on the Beta that we can't reveal just yet but it is good news.

STAY TUNED TO WWW.BONE-IDLE.IE FOR MORE INFO AS WE GET IT.
