TES V: Skyrim Special Edition – Survival Mode

Skyrim Creation Club’s all-new Survival Mode is now available on Steam for free for a limited time; PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players will get to experience Survival Mode and other Creations early this month. Both PC and console players will get Survival Mode free for one week once it launches on their preferred platform.

Survival Mode adds new gameplay features and challenges to transform Skyrim into a land of unrelenting cold and harsh wilderness. Check out the map below to see all the treacherous climate zones, plus helpful landmarks that could ensure you survive your journey.

Skyrim players will notice new status changes about their character once the Survival Mode is active on their game – including hunger, heat & cold, fatigue, and disease & afflictions. As you can imagine, food and bed rest has suddenly become very important to your character; the map above is also a good reference when out in the field for finding safe spots for sources of heat, places to rest, and cooking pots.

Cooked food is always better than raw; in fact, food poisoning is a thing now, so make sure cook your meats! Failing to cure a disease could make it progress into a worse case of it over time. Shrines won’t cure you for free either, you must make a gold offering to be cured – unless you use one that was created in your own homestead(s).

Health will no longer regenerate on it’s own; you will need food, potions or healing spells to replenish it. Carry weight has also been significantly reduced, and being over encumbered for too long will cause you to become fatigued much faster. Arrows and lock picks now have weight values, so be sure to drop off/dump any falmer or old iron arrows that you don’t really need alongside 200 steel arrows; they really do add up! You don’t really need those crossbow bolts or 100+ poisons either – drop them off in a handy chest, and run wild and free! The Steed stone will now only add 50+ carry capacity instead of 100, so while it will come in handy, make sure you keep it in mind if you can’t part with some particular items.

More of the constraints Survival mode contains can be found on Bethesda’s website, or in the help menu of TES V:Skyrim itself.
