Perhaps the surprise of the year came when Ubisoft released a parody video on April the first, many passed it off as a clever April fool’s joke but far from it. Far Cry Blood Dragon not only exists but it is f’n awesome. If you grew up on 80’s action movies then you will love this game.

It takes a very 80’s idea of what the future was meant to be like. Expect lots of neon, ridiculously cheesy dialogue, bad hair and over the top action. This is all topped off with a killer 80’s soundtrack and cool 16 bit cut scenes from the era.

Where Blood Dragon succeeds and something like Duke Nukem fails is that it looks retro but plays like a modern game. This is built on the same engine as seen in Far Cry 3, it has many of the same mechanics and gameplay systems with a retro 80’s skin placed over it. Blood Dragon is a spin off title rather than DLC so you don’t even need Far Cry 3 to play this digital download.

You play the amazing Rex “power” Cole a cyborg commando. You are not limited by things such as fatigue or the need to breathe when under water. You are a super soldier and you bring destruction where ever you go. This makes the game enjoyable but reduces the necessity for leveling up. You still get better take downs and weapons such as a quad barrels shotgun.

The Blood Dragons themselves are laser shooting giant lizards. They can be utilized in a similar fashion to the tigers in Far Cry 3, they will kill you but you can also unleash them in garrisons and pick of the enemies in the ensuing madness.

Overall: Blood Dragon is the perfect example of what can happen when developers are allowed to develop something outside of the main stream. This could easily have been a flop but what you do get is funny, action packed and very entertaining. The fact that this is a standalone game and not forced DLC makes it even better.
