Call of Duty Ghosts tries to set itself apart from the long running series. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on your point of view it does little to stray from the formula that has proven so popular. For better or worse this is Call of Duty, it sells incredibly well every year so why rock the boat.

You might be forgiven for thinking that a game titled “Ghosts” would be about an elite crew of covert operators on secret missions deep behind enemy lines, and that missions would take a more subtle approach than the outrageous set pieces the series is renowned for, but this is quickly removed in the opening few minutes.

South America for some reason has decided to launch an attack on the US, after an opening scene that sees the high jacking of a space station/orbital cannon the astro-terrorists launch an attack on the US and the game continues along this rather ridiculous path. If you can get past how silly it is and how poor the story is there are some enjoyable set pieces and cut scenes. Just as you have dispelled disbelief and started to get into the game it is suddenly all over.

Call of Duty games are less focused on storytelling and more aimed at the online frag fest and here we do find some improvements. Selecting weapons, modifications and perks are freely available by making use of the clever points system that lets players select whatever load out they like without restrictions as long as it fits within their .

Players can create their own soldiers choosing the sex, style and load outs of each, these make up your squad. You can have up to 10 squad members but you need to unlock these slots by earning enough points in game. Unlocking all of the slots will take a long time to complete all the necessary challenges.

The ever popular Zombie mode has been revamped as Extinction and the zombies have been swapped for aliens. It follows the same standard horde mode style and is an enjoyable change from the normal multiplayer games.

One of the major problems with the game is the map and player numbers. Some maps such as Stone Haven are pretty big and the low player numbers does not suit the traditional COD gameplay style. Others like Strike Zone are smaller but are not cluttered a suit the small player numbers.

The Next Gen versions brings with it bigger player numbers which suits the larger maps but the smaller ones become a little cluttered. It also has a host of graphical and lighting improvements but the differences are not massive.

Overall: The promise of being something new or different is quickly removed, Ghosts is not the best in the series but also far from the worst. There is little that needs to be said about COD, the fans need little convincing to part with their money and as long as they are happy with the game the studio have done their job.

SCORE 3/5
