Darkside Detective was born in just 8 short hours at the Galway Game Jam in November 2014, this early prototype created by Paul Conway and Christopher Colston (which you can play here) features the full original case for you to complete. This gives you a good feel for what to expect from the point and click mechanics, the art style, the humour, and the music. I fully recommend you join the thousands of others who have now played and loved this micro adventure.

Paul and Christopher were the main forces behind organizing the Galway Game Jam, something they wanted to do to help contribute to the West of Ireland Game Dev Community. Despite being the main organizers and having a full day of admin and hosting duties, they found that being surrounded by such a hive of creative activity got the better of their own natural inclining to create and they started to throw together some ideas of their own.

Christopher having just come off the back of creating an adventure game (Randall and Eimear) had become super familiar with Unity’s Adventure Creator Plug-in. Paul a dab hand at pixel art design knew he could whip up some descent looking settings and characters in the short time they had. A simple enough story of a missing girl would be enough of a base for them to tie it all together.

Despite being cobbled together in less than 8 hours, and having to cut the story a little short, by the end of the day the prototype was there and it worked. However both noticed something about the game, it had a certain charm that appealed to them and they wanted to investigate it further. In fact for gamers of a certain vintage that grew up on Lucas Art’s Indiana Jones titles you will feel an instant connection.

The demo was uploaded to a few Facebook groups and posted online in an attempt to garner some feedback. Expecting comments on the presentation and gameplay they were surprised to see what they had come to believe was a shortcoming might just be their biggest selling point.

As mentioned the demo was cut short due to time constraints on the day, but after being played over 700 times in the first two days by the community the surprising feedback was that they liked this bite sized story, without further prompting the Micro Adventure was born!

Since that point the team has refocused on expanding the game. Buoyed by the continued popularity of the demo that has now been played thousands of times, and the expansion of the team which has seen Dave McCabe (writing) and Ben Prunty (Music) add their own magic. The focus is now to bring a full game to market packed with tons of short cases for you to crack.

The recent news that the game met its Steam Greenlight goals in just five short days, and is now part of the Greenlight Program means it is full steam ahead for the team, (come on we had to get one bad pun in somewhere!!).

There is so much more we could write and we will be writing more in the future as the game gets closer to launch but for now we will leave you with this short description of the game from the team themselves.

Where cultists crawl, where demons dwell, where the occult… occults? you’ll find Detective Francis McQueen, the sole member of the criminally underfunded Darkside Division. When evil darkens the doorsteps of Twin Lakes City – hell, even when it just loiters around shop fronts or hangs out in shady alleyways – he’s there, ready to investigate the cases that nobody else will. He is The Darkside Detective.

The Darkside Detective is a micro-adventure game with a distinct art style and charm. It’s being developed for PC, Mac, Smart Phones and Tablet devices, and is set to be released later this year. The game consists of a series of humorous bite-size investigations into the occult and extraordinary”.
