The second of the God of War HD remakes to hit the shelves in recent times, Collection Vol 1 brought the PS2 masterpieces into the HD world making huge strides in terms of graphics. Collection Vol 2 takes the previously “only on PSP” games and brings them to the PS3 again with a HD remake just this time not as dramatic as they already looked pretty dam good.

The Chains of Olympus was first released all the way back in 2008 and tells the story of Kratos’s battle with the Goddess Persephone hell bend on destroying the world, Kratos of course (hell bent on destroying anything getting in his way) is trying to stop her.

The second part of the package is personally my favourite GOW game, The Ghost of Sparta, in which Kratos just as angry as ever sets off to free his brother who is trapped in the Underworld. Along the way you have the usual push this and pull that puzzles and more button bashing than can be healthy. At least this time your thumbs won’t have to endure the PSP’s tiny controls.

Both games were shipped out to a different studio “Ready at Dawn” for the PSP versions and to be honest they do a really good job of bringing the spectacular mayhem to the small screen. When blown up onto the big screen for the PS3 remake they are still impressive but you always know that this is a PSP remake. With the usually breath taking scenery subdued slightly to fit the small screen neighter game reach the heights of GOW3. While the game looks really good it has to be mentioned that it’s not up to GOW3 levels but then again it is a HD remake so you shouldn’t expect that anyway.

Some nice touches are granted through the use of a second analogue stick which is used to dodge enemies. This is far better than using the shoulder buttons. Rumble also has been added and of course it still packs a punch. Kratos still wields his trusty blades and can still take opponents down in a rugby tackle style take down which is very satisfying.

Along with the graphical upgrade it has also received an audio upgrade as well as the obligatory 3D option should you be lucky enough to own a 3D TV.

For fans of Kratos this is perfect, it’s two more outings as your favourite psychopath in his mythological world. The stories are quite good particularly the second game, and the addition of fighting alongside your brother is a stroke of genius.

If you consider their humble beginning both games are quite solid pieces of work, if you hold it up against GOW3 they can still hold their own as games but are nowhere near as visually impressive. Understanding that this is a PSP to PS3 HD remake and making small allowances for that I can see no reason as to why any fan will not love this package and it’s at a pretty reasonable price too.
