Polyphony Digital the creators of the long running Gran Turismo series have one last entry for the PS3 before moving on to Sony’s Next Gen console. It was a little surprising when GT6 was first announced that it was not a PS4 launch title. Sometimes while playing the game it looks so good you might wonder why it wasn’t. Although when you consider the amount of work that goes into getting the game looking and playing so well on the PS3, the team would have had to start a few years ago.

As mentioned this game looks incredible and bar some small drop offs for objects in the distance and some oddly placed backdrops the game plays at a smooth 60fps at 1080p. Outside the cars you are greeted by an incredible level of detail, exactly what we have come to expect from the series. It is matched by the impressive audio, when you are inside the vehicles using a decent surround system it really does feel like the real thing or at least as close as most of us will ever get to driving these super cars.

Gameplay: The game has never strayed too far from its roots choosing subtle tweaks rather than massive leaps. This is a simulation rather than an arcade racer so expect cars to follow the driving line and act realistically. That is not to say it is not exciting but you will not find Hollywood chases or crashes here. This is about giving you the chance to experience what it is like to drive these cars and there are thousands of them, far too many to mention from historic classics all the way up to the most modern and into the future with some concept designs.

While it gives you a chance to experience a fast array of vehicles you need to learn all of their subtle differences. Things like braking distances, how the car veers to one side under hard braking or accelerating, the cars cornering ability acceleration etc all all different for every model. For those new to the series there is the option for driving assistance but beyond the first few races you really are better off just learning the hard way.

There is quite a lot to say about GT6, the series has always been about delivering a quality driving experience and it does this but at the same time the same old negatives appear yet again. All the stunning environments and cars take time to load, this can lead to excessive amounts of time spent not actually playing but stuck looking at the loading screen. The other big problem that has plagued the series is the car damage. For all its realism it always falls apart when you are involved in a 100 mile an hour smash and you ding your bumper and drive away.

Overall: For a PS3 game it does still look amazing. The list of game modes, cars and tracks ensure that you will be playing for a long time to come.

Fans of the series will be delighted that the team have delivered yet another stunning racing title.
