The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile is the latest downloadable title to hit Xbox LIVE Arcade from Ska Studios and is the follow-up to 2009 title The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai. It is a 2D side scrolling beat ‘em up that has you resume the role of the Dishwasher, or take control of Yuki who is the Dishwashers sister in two separate campaigns. The story starts 2 years ago with a flashback of the Dishwasher killing Yuki. The Yuki wakes up aboard a Space Jail and we learn that she has been blamed for destroying the world that Chef and The Dishwasher destroyed after the events of the first game. She has a nightmare and wakes up to the image of a dead prison guard and goes about escaping from the prison.

Gameplay stays very much the same as the original with the usual hack and slash with plenty of guts and gore. The game stays as dark and bloody as Dead Samuri and wouldn’t work any other way. Blood is splattered all over each level and this adds to the grimy world. Usually the enemies come in their droves and it is up to you kill them in whatever way possible with your array of weapons from Samurai swords to machetes. The fighting is really fast and sometimes confusing as you can get lost in the mindless killing and start fighting a wall. Each enemy has a certain weakness, whether it is a hail of bullets from your Uzi or a quick jab of your chainsaw, but don’t underestimate the enemy as sometimes they will overpower and leave you helpless. There are a range of combos that can be viewed in the main menu and each has a devastating effect.

There are a number of bosses in which you must defeat in order to advance and each one has a pattern such as killing their minions and then chipping away at their health bar. If you are finding it too easy or too hard then you are left with a selection of five difficulties to choose from.

There are other modes apart form the main story, one being the Dishwasher Challenge which has you facing against non stop waves of enemies in order to place on the leaderboards with the quickest times and highest combos. Arcade mode is something similar but has an ending and you pick what battles from each level you want to play in. Multiplayer consists of co-op story and arcade and runs smoothly like single player. Unfortunately at the time of writing this there was only one other person online and the community will decrease quickly. Thankfully there is local play to combat this. The leaderboards are split into many categories: Arcade, Dish Challenge and Speed Run.

All in all, the Dishwasher: Vampire Smile is a fun dark game that any fan of the first one will greatly appreciate. There are few flaws such as online, but at 800MS Points this game is a steal.

SCORE “C” Very Good Game
