The Spielberg produced apocalyptic sci-fi series is getting its own game and will be released very, very soon. Broadcasting primarily in the U.S., Falling Skies received positive reviews when the series premiered in 2011. It tells the story of humanities last stand against extra-terrestrials, who have invaded the Earth and murdered 90% of the world’s population. And they are also rounding up Earth’s children in order to control their minds.

The show has garnered an impressive following in the U.S. and seems like an ideal candidate for an action title tie-in, with plenty of alien power-ups and impressive set-pieces. The game itself is near completion, and is allegedly on track for it’s Q4 release.
Which might be unfortunate, because the game itself does not look at all impressive.

When Namco presented us with this information, they quite pointedly showed us a lot of exciting clips from the TV show, and little else. What we did see of the actual game was ugly. Early PS2 era ugly.
Labeling itself as a ‘tactical shooter’, we sort of expected a Call of Duty or Resistance clone, a bland enough concept in itself. Instead the game looks like it evolved (and we use that term loosely) from the most forgettable shooter titles. It looks dull, flavourless and unexciting, not what we’d expect from a game with Aliens in it at all (with one glaring exception).

Admittedly this is first impressions, and we only got a quick glimpse of the actual gameplay, but the fact we were shown so little says quite a lot.
We can’t say for definite (some games can surprise you) but it seems likely that this a game destined for the bargain bin.

Falling Skies is set for release in Fall, 2014
