What is ‘Tenkai Knights: Brave Battle’?

Developer: Viz Media

Publisher: Namco Bandai

Format: 3DS

Release Date: Fall 2014

Bandai Namco recently announced some impressive anime titles in their upcoming line-up of games for the year. Yet, while we were familiar with many of them, Tenkai Knights had us drawing a blank.
What was this bizzare and very Japanese-looking game that saw you fighting in colourful mechs? And why did it look like it was made of Lego, when the Lego logo was no where to be seen?

“[Tenkai Knights] has nothing to do with Lego,” a Namco executive explained to us. “It is a ‘construction brick action game’ based on the popular anime series of the same name.”
There was something of an awkward silence after this. A ‘construction brick action game’ is something that you would swear Lego had the monopoly on, but apparently not, as Tenkai Knights is ‘completely different’, according to the embarrassed looking executive.

Whatever. We’re not really judging Namco for this, and to be honest, Tenkai Knights: Brave Battle actually looks like more fun than some of the Lego games we’ve played. The ‘construction brick’ aspect is more than just an aesthetic though, as it allows you to customize your character to give them better attributes, such as power and boost. This means that, depending on the length and complexity of the game, this might lean a little more into RPG territory, or at least contain RPG elements.

In terms of gameplay, it has a very distinct Super Smash Bros. vibe, which makes sense considering Namco are working on Super Smash Bros. Wii U at the moment anyway. However, there was a rather apparent focus on co-op rather than just vs. battles in the trailer, meaning that the story mode shouldn’t feel tacked on, as is often the case with Smash Bros.
With anime shows being what they are, we won’t even attempt to summarize what the story mode is about. Rest assured though, with Japan and giant robots involved, it’s bound to be pretty bonkers.

Tenkai Knights: Brave Battle is set for release in Fall, 2014
