Nintendo’s Pre-E3 Presentation – GamePads

Industry Event : E3 2012

Press Conference : Nintendo Pre E3 Presentation.

Date 03.06.2012

At a surprisingly informative presentation, days before their E3 conference, Nintendo have started strong with a presentation outlining some of the upcoming Wii U’s functionality and potential.

Here we’ll look at some of the announced functionality for the Wii U gamepad and possibly the most surprising revelation of the entire presentation, the addition of a “traditional” controller for more hardcore gamers. First off we have the comparison between the originally announced Wii U tablet controller and the finalised, optimised and intriguing version

…featuring optimised ergonomic design…

as well as additional features not previously announced such as an NFC reader/writer!

Also we have confirmation of gyroscope and motion sensitive technology. However, one of the nicer features is the ability to use the gamepad as a TV remote, even if the console itself is off!

Nintendo have also confirmed that they have migrated from the sunken thumbstick design….

…to full on thumbsticks offering the ability to press down the sticks as well adding extra control, similar to that offered by Sony and Microsoft’s thumbsticks.

For those who missed previous announcements regarding the Wii U tablet, it has been confirmed to work WITH the console, supplementing some games (as seen below)

or in some cases or independently from the console itself (with our first glimpse of Wii U Mario!?).

The touch-screen can be seen to be used in several points in the presentation from an epic portrait of Link, as a input tool for messaging and from intuitive gameplay.

Perhaps the most surprising of all the detail in the presentation was the reveal of a “traditional” controller, stunningly similar to that of the current Xbox360 console. Designed with the more dedicated gamer in mind, it is an available accessory to purchase separately. Secondary to this, Nintendo have decided to support the Wii Mote, Nunchuck and balance board from the original Wii.

One last thing that Nintendo may have accidently let slip was the fact that in their promo video of how their console will embrace social networking and an online presence, we can see that the Wii U controller and console are BLACK rather than the previously previewed white version.

Whether or not this will be available from launch has also not been released but we can always hope (as this would nicely match my black PS3, 360 and current Wii).
