Simple maths question. What do you get when you get when you add elements of ‘Prince Of Persia’ and a polarity system of ‘Ikaruga’ and then throw developers Housemarque and publishers Ubisoft into the mix?

Ok, maybe it’s not exactly maths but when you combine all of these things together, you’re left with guaranteed gaming goodness.

Outland is available from the Xbox Live Arcade and the Playstation Network for 800 Microsoft points or around €10 depending on which platform you own and already, even before this review begins, it is definitely worth a purchase.

Outland is a two dimensional platformer with plenty of action to (literally) shake a stick at.

You play as a silhouetted character who is plagued by various visions. In order to understand these visions you must bring your character through a huge open world environment to learn new abilities to overcome various obstacles and enemies to progress.

Gameplay mainly revolves you switching colours by hitting the shoulder buttons in order to destroy enemies and traverse obstacles of the opposite colour.

Switching between blue and red allows the player to gain progress through each area which, initially are not accessible.

Gameplay itself is fluid and works like a charm. It’s a challenging enough game but extremely rewarding especially the boss battles which are particularly well thought out by the developers and require a lot of concentration from the player.

Graphically the game is sound and the environment you’re in is stunning looking. However, it’s not the foreground that sucks the player in. It’s the vivid background that immediately engrosses you and you would be forgiven if you just put your controller down and stared at the background for five minutes straight before playing.

CONCLUSION

Overall, ‘Outland’ is a remarkable effort and is as close to gaming perfection as you’re likely to find. Challenging, beautiful and absolutely fantastic to play. As a gamer, you owe it to yourself to purchase this.
