Release Date 2012

The PS Vita as you know by now will land early next year in the EU region, with its Dual Analogue sticks and impressive large screen and touch controls it’s the perfect console to take on the FPS market.

Despite Insomniac Games deciding to finish off the impressive Resistance series this summer on PS3 at least. Fans will still get their fix of Chimera slaughtering though thanks to the Developer team at Nihilistic who takes up the responsibility of producing a handheld Vita version.

Resistance : Burning Skies takes place just before the events of Resistance 2 and is set in New York City putting you right in the middle of the Chimera destruction of the Big Apple and tells the story of a brand new hero NYC Fire fighter Tom Riley.

We got to have a brief hand’s on with Resistance Burning skies this summer and to say its impressive is an understatement. As you would expect the touch controls do play a role in the game and you very quickly come to find them very intuitive.

As a Fire fighter the game wouldn’t be complete if you didn’t have access to your heavy duty Fire axe for up close melee attacks. The axe sits on the screen next to the Square button a quick slide across your enemy and they are split open with a single blow.

Targeting is also given some touch controls but only with specific weapons such as the Bulls eye or a new weapon in the game called the CFG. Tapping the targets on screen locks onto the Chimera and you can then shoot as normal. The touch controls are useful but not intrusive, and used sensibly. The weapon wheel can be used using the touch or the standard method players are used to.

Burning Skies makes use of the built in tilt feature of the Vita to help peak out of cover, crouching behind a piece of cover locks you in. You can then tilt forward or side to side to have a look to make sure the cost is clear before leaving cover again.

From the short time we had with the early build we can confirm that the game is well on its way to fulfilling the promise of delivering a full scale FPS to a handheld device. Every time we get our mucky paws on a Vita we are blown away, as long as the Vita has a good internet browser it will change the way we game for ever.
