Sly, Bentley, Murray and friends are back for another adventure and this time they are on the PS Vita as well as the PS3. Thieves in Time is the latest in the series but a departure from the studio perhaps most famous for this series. Sucker Punch studios who have gone on to work on the Infamous series have been quite busy with Cole and friends so they passed the torch to another studio to pick up and run with.

Sanzaru Games get their chance to put their own twist on the long running series. For those looking for something fresh you may be disappointed but for those who want an old school Sly platformer then you’re in luck.

The game still holds its appeal in all departments, it looks amazing, plays really well and still has loads of that well known humor. There are some frame rate issues during the more epic moments and long load times but nothing too off putting and hopefully something that can be quickly patched.

As the name suggests Thieves of Time is set around time travel and has a number of different era’s for you to explore. As fans of the series are now used to open worlds it is good to see that not only can you freely explore each of the five areas but they are massive. While the story modes are clearly marked out there are still plenty of other side quests to take part in.

The different “era’s will see you visit Cavemen, Knights and Ninja’s and with each different era you get a new host of outfits and skills for Sly but the game also boasts a fully playable cast, Thieves in Time will see you play as many different characters with different styles and game modes.

The game is one of the biggest ever created for a Sly game and it is not sparsely filled either. Each different area is busy and exciting that makes great use of the Vita’s power. Play time is around 9 hours and this can be stretched out to almost double that by doing all the extra side quests.

This is quite a long game and often feels stretched out artificially. Ememy AI leaves a lot to be desired and there are times when you are slogging through sections just to finish the game.

That said for a Vita title it is very enjoyable, it looks and plays really well and for the most part is an enjoyable platformer. It does nothing to re-invent the series and depending on what you want form the series this is either a blessing or a curse.

Overall: Old School Sly fans that never grew out of the series will be right at home, for those who did grown up or are just growing tired of something that last hit its high notes on the PS2 it will be a letdown and often off putting.

Score. 7/10
