Sony announced their first steps towards a game streaming service with “PlayStation Now” at today’s CES conference in Las Vegas. The service will be available this summer, first on PS4 and PS3 and later on Vita (even later to some TV’s and other Internet enabled devices). US gamers will be the first to see how Sony have utilized Gaikai’s streaming technology when it launches later this year.

Sony will offer full PS2 and PS3 games that will be fully portable as all games are playable directly from the cloud. Consumers have two payment options they can either rent their favorite titles for short periods or avail of the subscription model (more details on this will most likely be released nearer the time).

PSBlog had this to say.

Leveraging Gaikai’s advanced cloud-based technology, PlayStation Now will allow you to:

  • Play video games instantly across multiple devices, similar to the way you might stream TV, movies, and music.
  • Stream full games to all of your compatible PlayStation devices including PS4, PS3, and PlayStation Vita as well as non-PlayStation devices, beginning with 2014 BRAVIA TV models and expanding to numerous other Internet-connected devices.
  • Always play the most updated version of your game. With games hosted in the cloud, you can take your game with you – just log in with your Sony Entertainment Network account on a compatible device and your games and saved progress will be easily available.

We are awaiting news on a EU and Irish release but would expect it to be coming later this year.
