Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 follows the pretty standard formula of adding small but effective tweaks to an already solid franchise. This year’s main new feature is the addition of “Legends mode” which gives you a golfing history lesson. Also featured for the first time are players from the LPGA. Smaller expansions add features like the ability to include more players in your country club, night time courses, different weather patterns and of course the mandatory motion control options.

Some games are happy to add legends as little more than a skin that you use on modern courses so it is a delight to actually play as the legend in their own era with their own equipment and even the camera’s reflect the era with grainy black and white shots making a change from the crisp modern HD we are used to.

Golf as a sport has been around for a long time and this has been reflected in the legends mode. It features 50 key moments from the previous 130 years and it is up to you to take on these challenges to see if you can match the legends. Rather than just having you play random events you get a little history lesson on why this was such an important moment in golfing history.

Country clubs have been expanded, these are essentially your online community, allowing voice chat and other cool interactions but this is mainly used to add a competitive mode as Country Clubs are pitted against each other in league tables for the season.

Other online features allow you to see shot arcs from other players on the same hole as you, you can try to match them or try your own style to see can you outdo them.

The LPGA player make their first appearance as fully playable characters (in female only tournaments of course). Also for the first time you can play at night with some cool glow sticks marking out the course. You can also now play many courses in various weather systems to add an extra feature.

Motion control makes a return on both the Kinect and Move with the Move being the more effective simple because you have something to hold. Golf is a game perfect for motion controls but it can still be a bit of a chore playing all 18 holes standing up.

Overall : There are lots of nice little additions this year, legends mode is pretty cool and makes a change from just doing the normal career. The rest are fine additions but nothing that really fundamentally changes the game.

As always tiger Woods is a very solid game, if you pick it up each year then you will enjoy this year’s title and if you have been away for a year or two what better time to get back into the franchise.

SCORE 8/10
