You could be forgiven for thinking that Tate Interactive’s “Urban Trail Freestyle” is linked in some way to the excellent Trails Evolution that appeared on Xbox Arcade recently, as both game are incredibly similar in not only name but also in terms of their setting, presentation and gameplay.

Both games consist of the player racing their trial bike across a 2D track using a combination of the bike’s power and the riders balance to successfully navigate each track and pull off ever increasingly ridiculous stunts. It is a simple gameplay mechanic but one that is addictively entertaining.

There are 5 different settings for you to take on. You will race through various settings such as office blocks, building sites, parks and large industrial complexes. Each setting has its own distinct styling and layout that require a different approach from the rider.

This is all wrapped up loosely in a very light storyline (that you are on the run from the cops). The story does little more than allow the cops to smash through the stages offering some exciting stunt opportunities for you as cars and helicopters crash into your track creating new ramps.

For the most part it is all about pulling off (and landing) tricks. The traditional mode is all about your score, the bigger the trick the more points you rack up. The other mode offers a time trial and as such is slightly easier as it is about speed and less about the style.

Completing tracks grants you stars which are collected to unlock the next track. You can also collect bags of money to spend on bike upgrades. The upgrades are pretty basic, new wheels, new engine etc but this game is more about the tricks and less about the bike building. This does still give you something else to aim for while playing.

Overall: Urban Trials Freestyle takes much of its inspiration from Trials evolution although it never reaches the heights Evolution did, Urban Trials Freestyle does a decent enough job of creating a fun and addictive game that will keep you entertained for a few hours at least. It is out for PS3 and Vita but I felt it suited the Vita due to the easy pick up and play aspect to this type of game.
