The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn has two things the first is possibly the longest title of any recent game and the second is that it has an undeniable charm about it that came as quite a surprise.

Movie tie ins are notoriously poor in the video game world but this couldn’t be further from the truth with Tintin, but a word of warning it does follow the film quite closely so do make sure you watch the film first unless you want spoilers.

Of course it is the tie of the massive Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson film of the same name and as such is jam packed with all the exciting set pieces from the action packed movie and also it does look and sound amazing.

Borrowing from the original score from the movie Tintin is delightful to play, the voice work is also excellent and the animation is really quite excellent. So that only leaves the gameplay and while it is quite an easy game for the older gamer to get to grips with, that doesn’t make it any less fun.

The game mixes nicely elements of 2D and3D plat formers to give the game an extra sense of depth. The gameplay is mixed even further by letting you control a number of the other characters such as Captain Haddocks ancestors and Snowy the dog. Snowy can be used to squeeze into tight spots and grab keys to help Tintin progress, he can also sniff out trails left that a human could never follow.

The game has this quaint charm that fits in with the Tintin world when you knock out an enemy they are left dazed with stars spinning around their heads. There are many funny moments and also many exciting moments, one particular car chase stuck with me.

Overall : It shouldn’t be good but it is, a combination of good graphics, sound and pleasant gameplay means that there is very little that I can fault Tintin on. Perhaps it’s a bit easy but it’s the kind of game that can be played by and with gamers of all ages thanks to the excellent co-op modes.

 Score 8/10
